The is a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate a sustained commitment to academic excellence and belonging across all levels of campus life. Hope will be featured along with the other 50 recipients in the undergraduate category, in the October issue of INSIGHT Into Academia magazine. The publication selects the HEED Award recipients based on its review of several criteria that together, demonstrate a holistic commitment to equity, access, inclusion and diversity across their campus.
“We thank the Hope community for their contributions in supporting our students, staff, and faculty, and helping ensure that every student can fully experience all that Hope College has to offer,” said Dr. Sonja Trent-Brown, vice president for culture and inclusive excellence at Hope.
This prestigious award celebrates institutions that have implemented comprehensive strategies to support excellence in student success, employee recruitment and retention, and welcoming environments where everyone can achieve success. Award applications are evaluated across recruitment, retention, policy, programs, leadership and more.

- The high student engagement in programming offered by the college’s Center for Diversity and Inclusion, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary at Hope.
- The “Hope Forward” pilot initiative, which has fully funded tuition for 24-33 students annually since launching in 2020. The first cohort of “Hope Forward” graduates celebrated in May 2025.
- The first Hope-Western Prison Education Program class of 11 (incarcerated and paroled) students who graduated in May with a Christian liberal arts degree.
- Other elements contributing to receiving the 2025 HEED Award include the full menu of Multicultural Student Organizations, and policies and practices across several departments (such as HR, Campus Ministries, Admissions, Athletics, Career Counseling, to name a few).
