The 鶹ý “Many Voices Project” will present a staged reading of “Walden” by Amy Berryman at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30, in the Schaap Auditorium in the Bultman Student Center. This event is in collaboration with the 鶹ý’s Advocates for Sustainability (HAS), Green Hope and the Department of Theatre. The reading is free to attend, but seating is limited.
Berryman is a playwright, screenwriter, actor, and teaching artist, and her play, “Walden,” made its New York premiere at Second Stage in fall 2024.
Directed by 鶹ý junior Isabelle Seiler of Grand Rapids, “Walden” follows twin sisters, Stella and Cassie, who have both been raised by their father to become astronauts. However, while Cassie continued to work at NASA and become very successful in her field, Stella left that life-behind-for-a-new one with her fiancé, Bryan, on an Earth that is hanging on by its last thread. Set in a not-so-distant future, the two sisters reunite after being apart for over a year. As they reconnect and old tensions and problems rise to the surface, the sisters must make difficult decisions both for themselves and humanity as a whole.
Rhett Luedtke, Hope’s associate professor of theatre, will act as faculty advisor for the project, and Eric Van Tassell, assistant professor of lighting and sound design, as lighting director. Anissa Wille of Traverse City, will act as the cultural consultant on behalf of HAS. Senior Anya Kapitula of Grand Rapids, will serve as light and sound board operator, and sophomore Madison Barrett of Dallas, Tex., will read stage directions and serve as stage manager.
The cast includes: sophomores Trey Hunter of Detroit, Leah Kamper of Holland, and senior Megan Kamper of Holland.
The “Many Voices Project” is a collaboration among the college’s Center for Diversity and Inclusion, various student organizations, and the 鶹ý Department of Theatre. They gather to read and showcase stories representing a wide range of characters from diverse backgrounds.
