The 鶹ý Department of Music presents “An Evening of Jazz,” featuring drummer Ricky Sebastian on Saturday, November 15, at 7 p.m. in the concert hall of the Jack H. Miller Center. The public is invited and admission is free.

The concert will feature guest artist , an acclaimed drummer from New Orleans known for his versatility and rhythmic mastery. Throughout his celebrated career, Sebastian has performed and recorded with legendary artists including Jaco Pastorius, Herbie Mann, Tania Maria, Dr. John, Diane Schuur, Harry Belafonte and Michael Brecker. His artistry spans jazz, funk and world music, earning him international recognition as one of today’s most respected drummers.

Under the direction of Robert Shipley, the Jazz Arts Collective—鶹ý’s premier large jazz ensemble—brings a dynamic and creative focus to ensemble communication and improvisation. With a flexible wind section and rhythm-driven energy, this elite group delivers performances spanning the full jazz spectrum.

Joining them are the Jazz Guitar Combo, led by Lee Heerspink, and the Steps Ahead Jazz Combo, directed by Tom Lockwood. These jazz chamber ensembles specialize in both classic and contemporary jazz, showcasing the improvisational artistry of 鶹ý’s student musicians. 

Shipley, assistant professor of music and director of jazz studies at Hope, is a Grammy-nominated drummer whose career has included performances at Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden, The Tonight Show, and The Oprah Winfrey Show. He has performed with artists including Natalie Cole, Diana Ross, The Temptations, The O’Jays, and Chaka Khan. Now, he brings his passion for jazz to 鶹ý, inspiring the next generation of musicians.
